Speights West Coaster named 8th leg in 7in7!
Hmmm, sounds a bit odd I know, but in recognition of the determined efforts of Mal Law to run himself ragged for a great cause we have set up this year's SPEIGHTS West Coaster to be a 7in7 support event.
In case you've been living in a cave for the last 18 months and don't know about Mal's exploits, he is the man who last year became the first person ever to run NZ's 7 mainland Great Walks in the space of just 7 days. This was not only an amazing feat of endurance but raised $85,000 for the Leukaemia & Blood Foundation, a cause close to Mal's heart as he lost his brother to this cruel disease.
This year Mal has set himself another epic 7-day, 360km trail running challenge through the scenic but rugged Southern Lakes area, starting in Wanaka and finishing in Te Anau. He will be accompanied by a hundred or more support runners over the course of the week, all of whom will be fundraising for the same great cause. Included in this support team are quite a number of regular attendees at total sport events.
We know there is a great deal of support amongst our community for the 7in7 Challenge, but we also know that not everyone can make it down south to join Mal. So this is where the SPEIGHTS West Coaster comes in..... this year we are offering 20 spots on a special 'Team 7in7'.
|
Here's how it will work:
anyone entering the SPEIGHTS West Coaster, regardless of which distance, can apply for a place on the team.
places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
each person on the team will receive a very cool goody bag, courtesy of total sport and our awesome sponsors.
In return, each member of Team 7in7 will pledge to raise at least $500 for the Leukaemia & Blood Foundation, via the official 7in7 fundraising site.
Mal will set all team members up with their fundraising page and assist them with fundraising ideas and tips.
You then just turn up for the SPEIGHTS West Coaster and race as you would have done anyway – there is no expectation that you will run as a team – so need to be slowed down by Mal (who will likely be doing tail end Charlie duties anyway!).
If you'd like to show your support for Mal's amazing dedication to this worthy cause, and yourself help the 10,000 New Zealanders suffering from leukaemia, then apply for a place on the SPEIGHTS West Coaster Team 7in7 by clicking here.

42km marathon course map.pdf (498kb pdf)
The same great 2009 marathon course is back in 2010.
For those of you that did the marathon course prior to 2009 you will remember there was a nasty road loop involved. That all changed last year with the addition of a stunning private land loop from Bethells reserve. A true off road marathon was born!
2008's Marathon reccie report can be viewed here Download report here (173 kb pdf)
What didn’t change with the marathon was the toughness - in fact it remains nothing short of extreme!
Starting from the reserve at Bethells Beach, you'll head north for approx 1km. This is where the private land begins and a solid climb awaits. After knocking off a couple of km's (and feeling like you've done another 12) you'll be on Razorback Ridge (Click to print Private Land Map 790kb pdf)

28km course map.pdf (328kb pdf)
You do it all but miss out on the fantastic Bethells loop. This is certainly no ordinary 28km run. It's tough, it's scenic and for good athletes who don't want to indulge in the marathon this right here is off-road heaven!
You'll start at the reserve at Bethells Beach, heading north along the Te Henga trail, then the Goldies Bush / Mokoroa loop, and then back along the Te Henga trail to the finish at Bethells Beach.

18km course map.pdf (225kb pdf)
A straight and pure out and back on the Te Henga Walkway. A fantastic slice of the West Coast.
Starting at Bethells Beach, you're heading north along the Te Henga trail then back the way you came.
the Te Henga trail is tougher heading north from Bethells as it has significantly more climb, so you'll be heading back doing the easier leg!

10km course map.pdf (83.9kb pdf)
A straight and pure out and back on the Te Henga Walkway.
A fantastic slice of the West Coast. Starting at Bethells Beach, you're heading north along the Te Henga trail.
You'll turn around approx half way along the track then head back the way you came.
The Te Henga trail is tougher heading north from Bethells as it has significantly more climb, so you'll be heading back doing the easier bit!
