Land Rover Tussock Traverse
27km Alpine adventure run and walk..
41 days ago and counting.
Event date: Saturday 30 January, 2010
Why there is no contingency plan for this event..
Tongariro National Park is a very special place and this is a unique / boutique event. |
Participants should be aware of the nature of the park and four seasons it can throw at you in one day. |
We expect people to carry the compulsory gear to protect themselves – to be able to look after themselves, or someone else until help comes. |
The event would only be cancelled in extreme bad weather. |
Extreme bad weather impacts the park well beyond the day after the event - even if the next day is fine, the track will have taken a pounding and will be in a very sensitive state. |
300+ people going over the course the next day will damage the track and cause erosion. |
The event is to be monitored by DOC within its concession. |
If the event causes significant damage to the tracks (that will not repair itself naturally within a reasonable period of time) – the concession can be pulled by DOC, in effect ending this special event in this very special place. |
This is especially significant this year because of the track work being done near Tama Lakes. As it is, we have had to get extra permission this year to continue with the event while contractors are at work. |
The event requires over 30 volunteers in the park. Those volunteers all know the park well, are experienced trampers and many have first aid knowledge. ( We will have 2 paramedics, a doctor, an ambulance woman and other highly trained medics – because they want to be marshals, not because of their profession).
These volunteers come from all over the North Island – and part of their willingness to come is that those from Auckland often stay for the long weekend. |

The Land Rover Tussock Traverse is an event that’s been around for a few years, and offers keen off-road / trail runners and walkers one of the most scenic and varied event courses in the country. total sport have recently taken over the management of the Land Rover Tussock Traverse, but the event will continue to support the ongoing work of the Tongariro Natural History Society.
The course cuts across the heart of the World Heritage Tongariro National Park, starting from Tukino Road off the Desert Road and taking in the Rangipo Desert and Waihohonu traverse track before finishing at the Chateau Tongariro in Whakapapa. Last year the event recorded temperatures high in to the 30’s so this is one event that will test the camel in you! In order to preserve this fragile and unique environment, the event entrants are limited to only 300, so you’ll want to get your entry in early!

The Land Rover Tussock Traverse is a 27km run or walk. The course begins approximately 6kms up the Tukino Road in the Rangipo Desert (entrance off the Desert Road, SH1) with a long hard climb straight up. From there it’s a mixture of rock hopping, lava field, desert, alpine track (the views are amazing), and beech forest before finishing beside the Chateau Tongariro in Whakapapa for a well earned rest.

Entrants arranging their own transport must ensure they are dropped off at the start of the event (Tukino Road off SH1) 20 minutes prior to the start time.
The event director will advise at the race briefing if all compulsory equipment will be required depending on the weather conditions on the day. Any entrants clothing etc taken to the start of the race that is not required can be left in a clearly marked bag and checked in with a designated event marshal. Those bags will then be taken back to Whakapapa and can be collected by the entrant at the finish.
All entrants must stay on the course and pass all marshals. Tail end marshals will follow the last competitor and ensure everyone is off the mountain safely.
The tracks are open to the public so please respect their space.
Qualified ambulance and mountain safety support will be available both out on the course and at the event base but please acknowledge this is an offroad event and access could be difficult.
You are entering an alpine mountain environment with extreme weather changes. All entrants must carry the compulsory equipment. Spot checks of equipment will be carried out.
This event is held within the Tongariro National Park, a World Heritage Area. It is a special place and we are privileged to be able to hold this event in it. Please keep to the track at all times and take all rubbish with you. This event is run by total sport, in conjunction with the Tongariro Natural History Society to promote this magic place and we ask you to participate in this spirit.
Entrants must help other entrants in trouble. Having everyone finish safely is the major event priority.
Entrants not reaching the Waihohonu hut (approximately 10km from the start) within 3 hours of starting will be asked to leave the event and walk out to Desert Rd. Transport will be provided from there back to Whakapapa.
This event may be cancelled in extreme weather conditions at the Event Directors discretion. There is no reserve day and no refunds.

A wind/rainproof jacket, thermal top and beanie, emergency blanket and fluid must be carried on the event. We recommend carrying a minimum of 2 litres of water, as there is no safe water supply on the mountain, and there will be no drink/aid station stops on the event course.
Your compulsory event gear WILL be checked prior to the start and / or during the event on the course.
Highly recommended equipment: Thermal long johns, gloves and sun hat.
