TRAILFEST - Stillwater..... presented by OXFAM

TRAILFEST - Stillwater.....
presented by Oxfam

Its going to be wild.. 209 days ago days and counting.

Event date: 6th - 7th February..

Background
TRAILFEST - Stillwater

In 2006 our XTERRA Trail Run Series hosted a very successful off-road running event out of Stillwater Reserve. The three event options took in the ever popular Okura Bush Walkway, coastal sections and large sections of private land - the event attracted hundreds and the feedback on the courses was straight out of the top drawer.

It was so damn good we just knew we'd be back one day, so.......

Fast forward to 2010 and we are pleased to announce that we have secured:

A) One of the coolest event bases in town, it's near the water, right by Dacre Cottage and under 20 minutes north of central Auckland!

B) A quality array of off-road tracks (both private and public) for your off-road running pleasure.

Come February 6 - 7th it's TRAILFEST time in Stillwater!

And an Oxfam TRAILWALKER WARM-UP

As you all know Oxfam Trailwalker is on April 10 - 11th, 2010. total sport have worked closely with Oxfam New Zealand throughout the planning process of this event to, ensure the perfect training weekend is set-up for all the Oxfam Trailwalker participants. This is the perfect terrain to prepare you for the big 100km in April!

TRAILFEST - Stillwater

Below is how things work for the oxfam trail walker teams using this even as a warm up.
Saturday afternoon / evening:
-------------------------------------------------------
Because of the late finish / early start there will be camping available for both total sport and Oxfam Trailwalker participants. This is a great opportunity for your Support Crew to come along to test out their game plan especially through the night walk. It will also be an opportunity to talk with the Oxfam events team about your fundraising, event preparations and to try some of the many sponsors products on display. You can set up your tent from 1pm.

There will be two mandatory safety briefings for Oxfam teams prior to your departure, you must attend one of these before setting off.

Briefing one: 2.30pm
Briefing two: 4.30pm

Course maps will be available for collection on the day.

Start times and finish times:

You can start this course anytime between 3.00pm and 8.15pm but you MUST attend a safety briefing prior to your departure.

NOTE: Your chosen start time will ultimately depend on what pace you are looking to set and how much interaction with the possums you would like!

Please note all participants must be finished and off the trail prior to 11:00pm.

Those that will be walking close to 3km / hr (Teams aiming to complete OTW in the full 36 hours) will need to start as close to 3.00pm as possible to ensure they are finished prior to course cut off.

The latest possible start time is 8.00pm however this will be with the runners, so to be on the start line at this time you'd need to be confident that your team can complete the 21km (in the dark) in under 3 hours.

For details of the food option that is available Saturday night (which will support Hibiscus Hospice) please see below!

Saturday afternoon / evening:
-------------------------------------------------------

The team from Hibiscus Hospice have confirmed that they will be putting on a super feed for all you guys Saturday night.

We think a super feed post event which supports a great charity is well worth the $25 per head price tag so please factor this feed into your event preparations.

The Hibiscus team will be providing marinated chicken & sausages on the BBQ plus a range of salads (country style coleslaw, Hawaiian pasta & tossed lettuce). Also Thai spicy rice salad, gourmet potatoes & chives, bread rolls & butter. Throw in dessert which includes fruit salad, ice cream, tea & coffee & you can see it's great bang for buck.

This event hopes to raise a good amount of money for Hibiscus Hospice. A portion of the 14km Stillwater Sampler event will go towards Hospice and you'll also see Hospice volunteers out on the course as course marshals over the weekend.

Further donations can be fired in the Hospice direction on event day.

TRAILFEST - Stillwater
Early sunday morning:
-------------------------------------------------------
For Oxfam Trailwalker participants the day begins with a 7.15am briefing and at 7.30am you kick into the 30km Stillwater Strainer.

While some of the terrain would have been covered in the night half, the terrain is definitely worth going over twice and besides, everything looks better in the light! Right?

Smaller options are available if you'd prefer but the challenge of the weekend is really to complete 51km (just over half of the Oxfam Trailwalker course) and build some rapport with your team in doing so!

Course Maps
We will NOT have these online prior to event day - only available on event day.

The bulk of all courses are on private land (Weiti Forest) and the forest owners / managers (huge thanks Kevin and Paul) do not wish to see detailed maps of the road / trail network online. We have a great working relationship with these guys and as they are constantly having to issue trespass notices to people who venture onto their land we ask that the maps that will be handed out to you on event day (for your own safety) are not replicated.

It's now a good time to remind everyone that outside of the Okura Busy Walkway (the DOC track) all other trails used on event day ARE PRIVATE AND INACCESSIBLE outside of event day. Any competitor ignoring this only puts this event in jeopardy and will gain a trespass notice & a mention on the total sport website (no excuses) - so please consider yourself warned.
Driving Directions
  • 1) Get on the Northern Motorway
  • 2) Get off at the Oteha Valley Road exit and turn right on Oteha Valley Road.
  • 3) After approx 2km turn left onto East Coast Road.
  • 4) The right turn off East Coast Road onto the private land is approx 7km along East Coast Road (approx 2.5km past Haighs Access Road).
  • 5) This right hand turn will be signed using large red arrows and "Off Road Run" signage.
  • 6) Our event marshal will be just inside the gate ensuring only event vehicles pass through.
  • 7) Follow the "Off Road Run" signage down to the event base (5 - 10 minute drive from the turnoff).

Course Safety / Aid station info
Aid Stations will be scattered on all event courses (see course notes below for placement).

While aid stations will be out on the course, for your course we still highly recommend that all competitors are self-sufficient and treat the aid stations more like a back up option as opposed to the be all and end all.

We highly recommend that everyone is well hydrated before taking part in this event! Taking a hydration pack on your journey is a very smart idea especially if that summer sun is out! Each aid station will have water, and a limited supply of electrolytes and bananas.

First aids kits (incl vaseline) will also be placed at all aid stations in case anyone is in need of running repairs.

See above for compulsory gear on the night run.

    Kauri Dieback Disease
Kauri Die Back disease is not only a problem in the Waitakere Ranges - infact the Okura Bush Walkway is one of the worst affected tracks in the Auckland area.

The disease known as Phytophthora taxon Agathis (PTA), is killing Kauri of all sizes and the disease is spread by soil movement and infected soil on running shoes or tramping boots. We ask that you arrive to the event with clean shoes.

Competitors will need to head over compulsory mats both at the start and the finish along with one other place on the course. Whilst running please keep to the defined tracks to avoid disturbance of soil around tree roots.

We at total sport take this all very seriously and don't want to risk spreading PTA further.

    Ultra Marathon 100km and 200km
Not for the faint hearted, an ultra marathon is for serious runners of long distance.

With a choice of either a 100km or 200km course, this is a real challenge in a great location.

Due to the nature of the event, each runner must provide individual support for the duration of the event.

21KM NIGHT HALF - SATURDAY NIGHT
Our Shakepear Regional Park night run at the end of the 2009 XTERRA run series proved a couple of key things to us.

    A) Folk are very keen on the night run concept!

    B) They are bloody good fun!

So we start you off in fading daylight but you certainly have at least half an hour before you need to turn those compulsory headlamps on.

From there the task become a little harder as you weave under the cover of darkness through a selection of private land tracks including the famous Okura Busy Walkway.

The night course also offers Oxfam Trailwalker participants the opportunity to test out you gear in the dark – especially those head torches!

The "kids canter" offers a great opportunity for the kids to enjoy a fun slice of off-road running. The course never takes the nippers too far away from base so it's perfectly spectator friendly & most importantly safe!

Parents / caregivers are actively encouraged to scoot around the course alongside.
