|
On the eve of the sixth and final event in the series we present to you a NIGHT RUN at SHAKESPEAR REGIONAL PARK!
This park is absolute quality and this night run will have it all - farmland, interaction with some friendly animals, awesome well groomed and all-weather single trails, wider open trail sections perfect for a little sneaky night time passing action, a waterfall, one or two absolute buggers of uphill's and second to none views of a few distant structures which will likely be lit up - abit like you!
We lay out the course, all you need to supply is a headlight (one that works will make life easier for you) and a damn fine XTERRA Auckland attitude.

Race number & transponder picked up from the event base on the day of the event. We recommend checking into this area at least prior to your scheduled start time.
Remember to bring the race number you picked up at race 1. You need to pick up a new transponder and get your name ticked off at the registration tent at the event base on the day of the event.
If you didn’t pick up your race number at race 1 we will have it at the rego tent waiting for you. Remember if you are changing up or down courses we need to know so please let us know. We recommend checking into this area at least prior to your scheduled start time.

:
Shakespear Regional Park is less than 20km past the Northern Motorway exit at Silverdale. Allow 25mins – 35 minutes (max) to get to the event base from the Silverdale Off Ramp.
Once exiting the Northern at Silverdale:
Turn right at the first roundabout and head straight through the 2nd roundabout shortly after - staying on Hibiscus Coast Highway 17.
After approx 3km turn right onto Whangaparaoa Rd
– the huge Shakespear Regional Park signage should help you here!
At the very end of Whangaparoa Road (when the Army Bay carpark is on your left) make a right hand turn into the park. Shortly after make a left onto Bruce Harvey Drive and follow this road down to the event base.
Parking is available at Te Haruhi Bay |
|
Dropping a vehicle will save a decent amount of Benzene and for every car that parks at one of these carpooling spots from here until the end of the series we will contribute a further dollar to – and just like your gas bill it certainly all adds up!
A good carpooler brings a good attitude and a towel :) You won’t get anywhere near as grubby as Riverhead but please bring along a towel with you to the event! |
|
|
|
There will be a parking area right by the registration and start line in the large skid - it is however limited in space so please CARPOOL CARPOOL CARPOOL!
Total sport has a new forum (click here to view) on our website so we encourage you to get on there and find like minded off roaders in your area that you can carpool with!
We will have numerous parking marshals at event #5 directing you where to park so please follow their instructions & keep in mind that short walks to the registration area are inevitable for events of this size in locations like this.
The parking marshalls participate in the events so if you don’t listen to them you may encounter some “trouble” on the trails. |
|
|
 |
The parking in and around the actual event base is limited (and a little wet at present) so the more 'fully loaded' cars that arrive the better off for everyone in the event! |
 |
We are thinking big picture here - if we get good buy in from you guys for these events you will be saving $ on gas and helping out the environment while were doing it! |
 |
So many vehicles come to our event with only one soul in them - here's a great way to meet more people and share some more pre event nerves and post event laughs! |
safe driving!! |

This is a real nice way to finish the series for you guys. The main road will spread you well out before you dart off into your first short trail, run along the shoreline of Okoromai Bay, pass through the wetlands then into the Heritage Trail. This trail follows a stream, passes a waterfall and is kept in perfect nick by our friendly ARC rangers! One decent hill climb out on the open farmland joins you up with the lookout track (which as the name suggests will bring you quality views) then it’s down down down to the finish back at Te Haruhi Bay. We expect some quick times on this course!

TBC:
I’m not convinced anyone reads these but let’s say a 6 /10

You start the same way as the shorties. The main road will spread you well out before you dart off into your first short trail, run along the shoreline of Okoromai Bay, pass through the wetlands then into the Heritage Trail. This trail follows a stream, passes a waterfall and is kept in perfect nick by our friendly ARC rangers! One decent hill climb out on the open farmland joins you up with the lookout track (which as the name suggests will bring you quality views) then it’s down down down to Te Haruhi Bay. You’re just over halfway through so the best time to throw a monster hill at you. I want to see everyone hammer it! From the top you spit off onto the Tiri Tiri Track which features excellent pocket of bush, open farmland great cliff top views of Tiritiri Matangi Island and some good undulating terrain. A downhill finish for you guys too!
TBC
The course (distance wise) is probably the shortest mid course of the series) and while it has a little bit of kick to it in parts I’d still say the winners will knock this out pretty quick! I’m not convinced anyone actually reads these so let’s say a 6 /10

The full coastal assault at low tide followed by a workover on the track network gives you essentially a very unique final long course of the series. From the base it’s just over 1km of main road to split you up before hitting a couple of short flat trails to get the blood flowing. Once your feet hit the sand our North Shore City Coastal Challenge competitors will get a dose of nostalgia as you start to head over very similar terrain (albeit slightly further north). Don’t be fooled – this section will take a while and you won’t be (or can’t afford to be) moving at light speed. Some very peculiar angled rock sections, moss and the odd loose one means strapping your ankles probably isn’t a bad idea! Once you get onto the beach at Te Haruhi Bay you split from the superlongies and have the length of the Tiri Tiri track to tackle. It begins with a prick of an uphill, and includes a couple of awesome pockets of bush trail along with the grand views of Tiritiri Matangi Island. Once back on the beach again it’ll be a sprint along the sand and up the dune into the finish area.
TBC
It may be one of the shortest courses of the series but the coastal section will take quite some time and you do have a few hills on the track sections. I’m not convinced anyone actually reads these so let’s say a 7 /10 for your last hit out of the series.

Ok this is the business. Fullstop. Bryce and I have used this as a good training course the last couple of weeks (not telling you our slow times!) and the full coastal assault at low tide followed by a full workover on the complete track network is certainly enough to warrant the opening of a speights. It’s essentially two very different courses back to back resulting in a superb and quite unique final superlong course of the series. Some peculiar angled rock sections, moss and the odd loose one means strapping your ankles probably isn’t a bad idea! Once you run essentially past the event base (Te Haruhi Bay) you split from the longies, have another 2km of coastal terrain to tackle taking you to Okoromai Bay then you soak up the full track network inside the park (Heritage trail, lookout track, tiri tiri track). The 3 bush track sections, the grand views and the prick of an uphill with approx 5.5km to go will be remembered I’m sure!
TBC
It’s a drainer but in a different kind of way. . I’m not convinced anyone actually reads these so let’s say a 7.5 /10 for your last hit out of the series

You will still be following hanging blue XTERRA tape and our red arrows on a white coreflute backing however when you reach an intersection you will see
Longies will be following green triangular arrows,
Mid course will follow red triangular arrows
and Shorties will follow blue triangular arrows.
It is important that when you reach an intersection you follow your coloured triangular arrow & do not cross any tape that is laid on the ground at any time – this tape is laid out to stop you going in a particular direction. After you have passed an intersection you will again be following generic hanging blue XTERRA tape and red arrows. For piece of mind there will be another triangular arrow of your colour just past the intersection to confirm you are on the right track.
These courses will be checked and rechecked on the morning of the event but it is important you keep your eyes open out there!

Course Safety |
ALL LONG AND SUPERLONG COMPETITORS WILL HAVE A LONG COASTAL SECTION at the start of this event. While it will be run at low tide (low tide approx 8.00am) the terrain will be slippery and will require your full attention – we ask that you do not push the boundaries of what you feel comfortable with over this section!
We strongly recommend that all competitors come to these events sensibly prepared as some of these courses are very tough and weather conditions can be extremely changeable.
We recommend running with a camelbak loaded with up to 2L of water and/or Balance along with Balance squeezy’s and other nutritional nibbles. You can expect to be away from base for a decent period of time at these events!
While event medics will be at each event & competitors may encounter on course marshals with first aid on them it also pays to be safety conscious and carry items like:
basic first aid kit,
cell phone,
whistle
and additional warm clothing. |
