John KiddIt all started for me… in 2005 with the Coastal Challenge and has continued ever since through the Off-Road series, the Volcanoes and the DUAL.We heard it was great and had never been in a race before. We got a group together and started from Browns Bay. It was so much fun and a stunning day. We learnt that Vaseline is the best thing in the world ever (unfortunately we only learned the hard way) Classic moment / story / best part of the course… The best part of the course apart from the post race beer and BBQ is the first part from Arkles Bay to Long Bay. You look down the coast and the bays seem to go on and on forever. It’s not until several hours later that you realise that the bays do go on forever. I came forth in the full Monty last year (at the back of the field). I have always wanted a podium finish so that was kind of close. Newbie advice… Get a group together. Have a run on the rocks first so you know before the race the type of rock that is really slippery. There is hardly any but it is good to know. Invest in Vaseline! Shoes with tread make a heap of difference. Work out which distance you are OK running and do the next longer distance. You’ll love it! I keep coming back because… late summer wouldn’t be the same without the Coastal. In 2010 I'll be tackling the… Full Monty. I can’t let that course get away with making me stay out there so long like it did in 2009. Final comments / parting words… if you are thinking about it then sign up. A great day, a stunning course, and organised so well. Close Window |
